Breaking the Morning Fast

Is breakfast really the most important meal of the day? If you said yes, you are right! Eating breakfast is a healthy habit and a smart choice too! Breakfast is not just for kids as adults need more than a cup of coffee to get them through the day. Did you know that breakfast literally means “breaking the fast?” And the benefits to breaking the morning fast are fantastically delicious. Morning meals help replenish brain cells with energy and provide your body with essential vitamins and nutrients. Studies show breakfast skippers tend to ignore morning hunger cues and overeat throughout the day. Overeating can cause obesity which is linked with chronic health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Moreover, eating large portions of food at meal times, especially in the evening, can for sure disrupt healthful eating patterns.
However, there is good news. If you are thinking of becoming a breakfast eater you will most likely enjoy the benefit of feeling more energized and alert at school or work areas. Reminds me of school teacher who emphasized “eating a good breakfast” on exam days; as they knew the value of eating a daybreak meal.
More importantly what you eat matters greatly. Be sure to choose healthful foods like whole grains, nuts, lean proteins, low-fat dairy, fruits, and vegetables. With the right combination, a breakfast meal can provide you with calcium and vitamin D, heart-healthy fiber, antioxidants and vitamin C. Consider pairing milk or yogurt with oats (a complex carbohydrate and high fiber food) with a piece of fruit. Have a smoothie or a warm bowl of oatmeal. These foods out weight the nutritional benefits that you can’t find in donuts or sausage in a bun. Get a handle on unwanted food cravings and your waistline and give breakfast a try. Till next time, stay healthy and be well!
