When I was asked to do a blog on Anti Bullying, I was really taken back. It’s amazing how sometimes you never realize a subject is sensitive to you until you’re asked to write or talk about it. While researching the website, www.stopbullying.gov, I started to thinking about all the years growing up when I had to deal with bullying.

Recently, Reuters Health published that the life expectancy of a black man in prison is equal to that of his white counterpart. “Less than one percent of men died during incarceration, and there was no difference between black and white inmates. But outside prison walls, blacks have a higher rate of death at any given age than whites.” (Reuters Health, 2011) Of course I had to ask why?

If the rate of unprotected sex among Black MSM is very similar to that of White MSM then why is the rate of newly diagnosed cases of HIV among Black MSM a minimum of 4 times greater than that of our white counterparts?
I was raised by my grandmother and she used to give me words of wisdom and advice. At the time I
thought she didn’t know what she was talking about. She would say things like “Don’t count your eggs
before they hatch.”
Today was quite a sobering day as I sat in the plenary session and other group sessions at the National
HIV Prevention Conference. Yep, the rate of newly diagnosed HIV cases among young black gay/
bi-sexual men as well as African American transgendered females continues to rise.
I was sitting in a room of almost 3000 People and I began to look around. I wanted to see faces like mine, people who resembled me. To my surprise in this group of some 3000 people there was only, what I would call a “handful” of African American/Black people there.
